Our next set involves hundreds of 3/4 inch mdf strips that will require treatment on all four sides. The sawed edges of the mdf are like black holes for paint. We’ve tried several coats of latex kilz but it didn’t really make much of a difference. It just absorbs the paint and never matches the finish on the treated faces.  I saw a video recently of an artist sealing the MDF with Button Polish, which seems to be just a fancy way to make 50/50. They suggested that if button polish or 50/50 isn’t in your budget, to try PVA. Kilz makes a PVA but I have only used both 50/50 and PVA to seal drywall. I would imagine it should work fine on mdf but thought I’d reach out and see if anyone had tried this and had any luck, or preferred one product over another.
